The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank
The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes
In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.
Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The number of positions added to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.
Private Data Show Continued Decline
Though the bureau was set to publish September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication once the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, which he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that showed that prices are going up, although gradually. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
