European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
