British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of access tunnels down to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their skill and their valour," he said. "They were among thousands of British troops deployed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate militants who threaten our security, shows how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an assault killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
